RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 501 (RNA5SP501) is annotated as a pseudogene in the human genome, corresponding to a non-functional genomic locus homologous to 5S ribosomal RNA[5]. Unlike functional 5S rRNA, which is an integral RNA component of the ribosome's large subunit involved in mediating structural and functional interactions necessary for protein synthesis[1][3], this pseudogene is not transcribed into a functional rRNA and does not contribute to ribosome biogenesis or function[5]. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP501 are remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events and are generally considered to lack protein-coding potential or regulatory roles[4][5]. There are hundreds of such pseudogenes related to ribosomal RNAs in the human genome, and they are not known to play roles in health, disease, or as therapeutic targets[2][3][5].
