Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 51 (RNA5SP51) is a human pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. The functional 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA) is a ~120 nucleotide non-coding RNA component of the large ribosomal subunit, playing a structural and functional role in protein synthesis and ribosome assembly[1][5]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP51 are non-functional copies or fragments of 5S rRNA genes found throughout the genome, and typically lack the ability to produce functional RNA transcripts or proteins. Although pseudogenes are generally considered "genomic fossils", some ribosomal RNA pseudogenes are known to be transcribed, and may participate in gene regulation at the RNA level or through the production of small interfering RNAs, but these functions are mostly speculative and have not been specifically demonstrated for RNA5SP51[2][6]. RNA5SP51 is primarily used as a genomic marker, and there is no known role in disease, drug interaction, or therapeutic targeting. The rich family of 5S rRNA pseudogenes reflects the repetitive and evolutionary nature of ribosomal gene clusters in eukaryotic genomes[1][5].
