Target intelligence / Profile preview
RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 510 is a non-coding RNA element classified as a processed pseudogene of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Unlike functional 5S rRNA, which is an essential structural component of the ribosomal large subunit, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP510 are typically the result of genomic duplications or retrotransposition events and do not produce functional molecules. They may be annotated in genomic databases and sometimes appear in transcriptomic studies, but lack established biological activity. The “pseudogene” designation means this locus is a non-functional genomic sequence derived from a functional gene; in this case, it is related to ribosomal 5S RNA but has lost RNA coding or structural function due to disabling mutations, absence of regulatory elements, or other genomic changes. Unlike the canonical 5S rRNA (which is not itself a drug target but is fundamental for ribosome function), pseudogenes do not encode proteins or functional RNAs and are not considered therapeutic targets, receptors, enzymes, transcription factors, or any druggable entity. The naming convention and inclusion in target lists may be misleading. If listed as a therapeutic target, this is incorrect, as it is a non-functional pseudogene. Some studies have found pseudogene expression signatures may have value in molecular subtyping of disease (e.g., cancer), but this is typically as part of a panel of genomic markers or for bioinformatic categorization, not because of direct molecular function or druggability.
