The functional ancestor, 5S ribosomal RNA, is a component of the large ribosomal subunit and is critical for ribosome structure and protein synthesis[3][1]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP516 arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition but acquire disablements—such as insertions, deletions, or stop codons—that render them incapable of normal gene function[4][6]. They are generally considered "genomic fossil" sequences and do not have direct functional roles in the cell; thus, they are not relevant as direct therapeutic or diagnostic targets.
