RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 528 (RNA5SP528) is a member of the 5S rRNA pseudogene family and is classified as a non-coding RNA. While canonical 5S rRNAs are critical structural components of the large ribosomal subunit and essential for protein synthesis[3], pseudogenes like RNA5SP528 do not encode functional rRNAs and are generally considered non-functional remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events[6][10]. However, emerging evidence suggests that some pseudogenes may have regulatory roles, such as generating small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), or participating in chromatin remodeling and gene expression regulation[2][4][6][8]. Specifically, some 5S rRNA pseudogene transcripts have been linked to the regulation of immune pathways, including interferon responses in liver disease[9]. Overall, RNA5SP528 is not a therapeutic target, does not interact with approved drugs, and its clinical significance, if any, would be through non-coding RNA-mediated gene regulatory mechanisms rather than direct molecular targeting.
