Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 61 (RNA5SP61) is a member of the 5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene family in humans. Pseudogenes are non-functional sequences similar to known genes but lack protein-coding or well-defined regulatory activity. The 5S ribosomal RNA is a component of the large ribosomal subunit and is vital for ribosome structure and function in translation, but pseudogene copies like RNA5SP61 do not encode functional rRNA and are generally not transcribed into functional RNAs. Some 5S rRNA pseudogene transcripts in humans have been found to interact with innate immune sensors such as RIG-I under specific conditions (e.g., viral infection), but this has not been demonstrated for RNA5SP61 itself—rather for distantly related pseudogenes like RNA5SP141. There is no evidence that RNA5SP61 participates in cellular signaling, pharmacological mechanisms, or has clinical relevance as a biomarker or therapeutic target. RNA5SP61 is not considered a molecular target for drug development, nor is it associated with disease pathology or therapeutic modulation. RNA5SP61 is a pseudogene—not a gene product, protein, or regulatory molecule with defined functional or therapeutic relevance. Pseudogenes can sometimes regulate parent gene expression via competing endogenous RNA mechanisms (ceRNA) or generation of small interfering RNAs, but there is no evidence of such a function for RNA5SP61 specifically. No drugs, mechanisms of action, biomarker roles, or safety concerns are associated with RNA5SP61. It is not a therapeutic target and should generally be excluded from structured target/therapeutic databases.

Biological functions

Potentially acts as a source of non-coding RNA, but there is no direct evidence for RNA5SP61 functioning in known biological processes. More broadly, some 5S rRNA pseudogene transcripts can regulate gene expression via RNA interference when processed into small RNAs in model organisms. There is no evidence that RNA5SP61 itself does this.
