RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 73 (RNA5SP73) is a pseudogene present in the human genome, annotated with NCBI Gene ID 100873307. The canonical 5S ribosomal RNA is a conserved component of the large ribosomal subunit that plays a structural role in ribosome stability and protein synthesis. However, RNA5SP73 is a pseudogene copy that does not encode a functional 5S rRNA molecule and is classified as nonfunctional. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP73 arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition and typically do not contribute to ribosome assembly or function. While there is emerging evidence that some pseudogenes may influence disease mechanisms at the transcriptomic level in cancer and other conditions, RNA5SP73 itself is not documented to have therapeutic, biomarker, or regulatory roles.
