Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 82 (RNA5SP82) is classified as a *pseudogene* in the human genome, most closely related to the 5S ribosomal RNA family. Pseudogenes are genomic sequences resembling functional genes but contain mutations or structural changes that prevent them from producing functional products. The RNA5SP82 locus does not encode a protein and is not known to be transcribed into a functional RNA species in human tissue. Like other ribosomal RNA pseudogenes, RNA5SP82 likely arose through gene duplication or retrotransposition and subsequent inactivation. While certain pseudogene transcripts can regulate gene expression or compete with parental gene transcripts, there is no evidence RNA5SP82 performs any biological function or is involved in disease. It is not considered a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or therapeutic target[1][2][3][6].
