Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 91 (RNA5SP91) is a noncoding RNA pseudogene originating from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. Unlike the canonical 5S rRNA, which is an essential structural component of the ribosome involved in protein synthesis[3][7], RNA5SP91 does not encode a functional RNA or protein but instead represents a genomic remnant with high sequence similarity to the parental ribosomal gene[2][8]. Although traditionally regarded as "junk DNA," recent research suggests that some pseudogenes are transcribed and may play regulatory roles by producing small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), or modulating the activity of RNA-binding proteins[4][6]. Such mechanisms can affect the expression of protein-coding genes, and pseudogenes have been linked to regulatory networks in cancer and other disease processes[4][6]. No direct evidence indicates that RNA5SP91 is actively involved in these processes or is a biomarker or therapeutic target.

Mechanism of action

Pseudogenes can regulate parental gene expression via siRNA production, acting as miRNA decoys, or interfering with RNA-binding protein activity. No known mechanisms of action for drugs targeting RNA5SP91.

03

Biological functions

Possible regulatory functions via RNA interference (siRNA production)Potential as microRNA decoy or ceRNA (competing endogenous RNA) for posttranscriptional regulationMay participate in modulation of gene expression by interacting with RNA-binding proteins
04

Disease associations

No specific disease association reported for RNA5SP91 (some pseudogenes have regulatory roles in cancer and other diseases)
