RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 121, pseudogene (RN7SL121P)

Target
RN7SL121P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA fragment (ancestral origin)

Overview

RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 121, pseudogene (RN7SL121P) is a nonfunctional genomic sequence derived from the ancestral 7SL RNA gene, which encodes the RNA component of the signal recognition particle. Pseudogenes result from duplication, retrotransposition, or disabling mutations that remove or truncate essential gene elements required for function. The majority of human 7SL-related loci are pseudogenes and do not contribute to protein synthesis or cellular signaling; these sequences are not transcribed to produce functional RNA or proteins. Occasionally, pseudogenes may be transcribed at very low levels, but such transcripts generally lack biological importance.
