Overview

RN7SL160P is a pseudogene corresponding to the 7SL RNA, which is a component of the signal recognition particle (SRP) that mediates cotranslational targeting and insertion of secretory proteins into the endoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotes. However, as a pseudogene, RN7SL160P is a nonfunctional, truncated, or mutated copy of the ancestral functional 7SL RNA gene, and does not produce a biologically active RNA or protein. Pseudogenes like this are remnants of genomic evolutionary processes and do not have therapeutic or biological activity. It does not have a known biological function, as pseudogenes are generally nonfunctional remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events. There are no known roles in disease; pseudogenes are typically "genomic fossils" without functional impact. The 7SL RNA (the ancestor of RN7SL160P) is essential for protein targeting via the SRP, but the pseudogene variant does not encode a functional product. Pseudogenes are by definition nonfunctional and not considered actionable therapeutic targets. Some pseudogenes may be transcribed but do not confer known biological effects, and RN7SL160P is specifically referenced as not being expressed at significant levels and not functional.
