Overview

RN7SL18P (RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 18, pseudogene) is a member of the large family of 7SL RNA-derived pseudogenes found throughout the human genome. Unlike the functional 7SL RNA, which serves a central role as a structural and functional RNA in the signal recognition particle (SRP) complex necessary for co-translational targeting of proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum, RN7SL18P is a non-functional pseudogene derived from this family. Pseudogenes like RN7SL18P are formed by retrotransposition: the functional RNA gene is copied back into the genome, but the resulting pseudogene typically lacks essential regulatory sequences or is disrupted by mutations, rendering it non-functional and unable to produce a functional product. Most 7SL pseudogenes, including RN7SL18P, are not known to be transcribed or to play any established role in cellular signaling, disease, or drug action, and are not considered therapeutic targets.

Other names
RN7SL18P
02

Biological functions

None (RN7SL18P is a pseudogene and not known to have a canonical biological function)
03

Disease associations

Other (Pseudogenes rarely have a direct role; functional 7SL RNA is involved in protein targeting, but not the pseudogene copies)
04

Safety considerations

Pseudogenes such as RN7SL18P may confound PCR and gene expression studies due to sequence similarity to functional genes
