Overview

RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 284, pseudogene (RN7SL284P) is classified as a pseudogene of the 7SL RNA, also known as signal recognition particle (SRP) RNA. The canonical 7SL RNA is an essential structural component of the signal recognition particle, which mediates the cotranslational targeting of secretory and membrane proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotic cells[2][3]. Pseudogenes such as RN7SL284P are derivative, typically nonfunctional genomic sequences generated by reverse flow of genetic information from 7SL RNA back into DNA, often truncated at either the 5’ or 3’ end, and they do not produce functional RNA or protein[4]. The vast majority of human 7SL-like sequences are pseudogenes and do not have known biological (or disease) function or role as therapeutic targets. RN7SL284P is officially recognized as a pseudogene by the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee and does not encode a functional RNA or protein product[2]. Unlike the active 7SL RNA, it does not participate in SRP-mediated protein targeting or any established biological process[2][4]. There are no reports of disease association, biomarker status, drug interactivity, or mechanism of action for this pseudogene. It is not considered a therapeutic target, nor does it have relevance for safety or therapeutic challenges, as its genomic product is not functional[2][4].
