Overview

RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 296, pseudogene (RN7SL296P) is a human pseudogene belonging to a large family of 7SL RNA-derived genetic elements. The canonical 7SL RNA is a structural non-coding RNA component of the *signal recognition particle* (SRP), which plays a critical role in targeting proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum during translation[5]. However, RN7SL296P is not a functional gene but a pseudogene—an inactivated copy or fragment produced through the reverse transcription and genomic insertion of 7SL RNA. These 7SL pseudogenes are structurally diverse and typically truncated at one or both ends of the original 7SL RNA sequence[1][3][7]. There is no evidence that RN7SL296P has a biological function, acts as a therapeutic target, or is involved in any disease processes. Most 7SL RNA pseudogenes are not transcribed or translated and are considered genomic “fossils” of retrotranspositional activity[1][3][7].
