Overview

RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 474, pseudogene (RN7SL474P) is one of many dispersed sequences within the human genome that resemble the 7SL RNA gene, but, due to truncations and sequence divergence, do not produce functional 7SL RNA. 7SL RNA itself forms the backbone of the signal recognition particle (SRP), essential for targeting secretory and membrane proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum[3][5]. The majority of 7SL-related sequences in the genome are classified as pseudogenes and result from reverse transcription and reinsertion of RNA sequences. Most are not transcribed or not functional if transcribed[7][9]. As a pseudogene, RN7SL474P may either have no effect or, consistent with some other pseudogenes, participate in the regulation of gene expression at the RNA level, but has not been demonstrated to do so functionally[1][4][6][8].

Biological functions

As a pseudogene, direct biological functions are usually absentPseudogenes can play regulatory roles by acting as microRNA decoysPseudogenes can provide antisense transcriptsPseudogenes can generate small interfering RNAs that may modulate expression of related coding genes

Disease associations

Pseudogenes generally do not encode functional productsSome pseudogenes in other families have been implicated in disease regulation, notably cancer, by affecting gene expression through competitive endogenous RNA mechanismsThere is no direct evidence for RN7SL474P itself in disease
