RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 478, pseudogene (RN7SL478P) is a human pseudogene that is part of a large family of genomic sequences derived from the 7SL RNA gene, the RNA component of the signal recognition particle (SRP)[4][1]. Unlike the functional 7SL RNA gene, pseudogenes such as RN7SL478P are generally non-coding; they are truncated or mutated copies that have arisen through retrotransposition—the reverse flow of genetic information from RNA back into genomic DNA[8][5][7]. The 7SL RNA itself is a conserved, functional non-coding RNA integral to the SRP, which guides protein targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum[3]. Thousands of 7SL pseudogene copies exist in the human genome, most of which, including RN7SL478P, do not produce functional RNA or protein products[5][7]. However, recent research has demonstrated that some pseudogenes may exert regulatory effects (e.g., as competitive endogenous RNAs or via antisense mechanisms on gene expression), influencing physiological and pathological processes such as cancer or other diseases, but such roles are context-dependent and not established for RN7SL478P specifically[2]. RN7SL478P is considered "nonfunctional" in the classical sense (not coding for a protein or RNA with a direct physiological activity), is not classified as a therapeutic target (e.g., not a receptor, enzyme, or drug target), and there are no known drugs, mechanisms, or biomarker uses associated with this pseudogene[4][1][8].
