RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 689, pseudogene (RN7SL689P) is a human processed pseudogene related to the 7SL RNA, which is the RNA component of the signal recognition particle (SRP)[3][4][5][7][8]. Unlike functional 7SL RNA genes, which participate in the targeting of nascent proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum by binding ribosomes and facilitating translocation[1], RN7SL689P is a non-functional, non-coding genomic element resulting from the reverse flow of genetic information (retrotransposition) from 7SL RNA into DNA[3][7][8]. It is part of a large family of 7SL RNA pseudogenes, nearly all of which are truncated and non-expressed copies lacking canonical gene function[3][5][7][8]. While some pseudogenic non-coding RNAs have regulatory roles (e.g., miRNA sponging or ceRNA activity[2]), no evidence demonstrates RN7SL689P functions as a therapeutic target, nor interacts with drugs, nor serves as a biomarker. Its designation as a pseudogene means it lacks protein-coding and known biological activity, though it may retain epigenetic marks linked to transcriptional activity in rare cases[2][6]. RN7SL689P is not a canonical drug target, receptor, or enzyme, and is generally annotated for genomic characterization rather than functional or clinical use[3][5][7][8]. Its presence in human DNA reflects the evolutionary history and diversity of pseudogene biogenesis, most notably through RNA-driven retrotransposition[3][7][8].
