Overview

RN7SL715P (RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 715, pseudogene) refers to a truncated, nonfunctional genomic copy related to the 7SL RNA gene, which encodes the RNA scaffold for the signal recognition particle (SRP) complex involved in protein targeting and translocation across membranes[2][3][4]. Pseudogenes like RN7SL715P originate from reverse transcription and integration into DNA but do not yield functional RNA or protein products. Most such loci are transcriptionally silent; even if transcripts exist, they are not part of functional signaling or metabolic pathways and are not recognized as therapeutic targets[1][4]. Context on 7SL RNA and its pseudogenes: Functional 7SL RNA is required for SRP activity in co-translational targeting of proteins to membranes[2][3]. RN7SL pseudogenes are numerous in the human genome and result from reverse transcribed copies of the original gene inserted back into DNA[4]. Only a few true 7SL RNA genes are functional; the rest, including RN7SL715P, show diverse structural truncations and sequence alterations[4]. RN7SL715P is thus correctly labeled as a pseudogene and has no direct molecular, therapeutic, or disease relevance. It should not be confused with the 7SL RNA or SRP complex, which do play central biological roles.
