It is categorized as a processed pseudogene, likely derived from retroposition of the 7SL RNA gene. The functional 7SL RNA forms the RNA component of the signal recognition particle (SRP), which is essential in the translocation of nascent proteins across the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, but RN7SL744P itself does not encode a functional product and is not involved in SRP activity. Pseudogenes generally have little or no biological function, but some can act as regulatory RNAs or miRNA decoys in specific contexts, particularly in cancer; however, there are no such roles described for RN7SL744P.
