RN7SL788P (RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 788, pseudogene) is a human pseudogene derived from reverse-transcribed integrations of the functional 7SL RNA gene into the genome[7][6][8][10]. 7SL RNA is an essential component of the signal recognition particle (SRP), a ribonucleoprotein complex involved in cotranslational targeting of proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum, but RN7SL788P itself is non-functional as it does not produce a mature or active RNA product. Across the human genome, hundreds of distinct 7SL RNA pseudogenes like RN7SL788P exist, most the result of reverse transcription rather than functional gene duplication. These pseudogenes are characterized by truncations and sequence divergence. There is currently no evidence that RN7SL788P is transcribed or has any regulatory or pathogenic role; it is considered genomic "junk" DNA, although in theory some pseudogenes can have regulatory functions in certain contexts[6][8][5].
