The 7SL RNA family encodes the RNA component of the signal recognition particle, which is crucial in directing the localization of nascent proteins. Most 7SL-like loci in the genome, including RN7SL815P, are generated by retrotransposition and do not produce functional RNA. RN7SL815P is formally recognized by genetic nomenclature committees but is not believed to encode an active product. It has no direct functional or disease relevance but has shown association, via copy number variants, with clinical outcomes in prostate cancer, likely as a genomic marker rather than a functional effector.
