Overview

RNA, U1 small nuclear 22, pseudogene (RNU1-22P) is a non-coding RNA gene of the pseudogene class in humans[1][4]. It is part of the extensive U1 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) pseudogene family. The canonical functional U1 snRNA genes play an essential role in splicing by recognizing the 5’ splice site of pre-mRNAs and participating as a core spliceosome component[3][5]. However, RNU1-22P lacks the ability to produce a functional U1 snRNA due to sequence disruptions typical of pseudogenes[5]. Historically, such U1 snRNA pseudogenes were classified as nonfunctional, but recent research indicates that some pseudogenes can be transcribed and may regulate gene expression via RNA-based mechanisms, such as acting as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or miRNA sponges[2][5]. For RNU1-22P specifically, there is no direct evidence of biological or therapeutic targeting relevance, nor association with disease, biomarkers, or drug interactions, but its broader family is under investigation for regulatory roles in gene expression and disease.
