Overview

RNU1-40P (RNA, U1 small nuclear 40, pseudogene) is a human pseudogene related to the U1 small nuclear RNA family[1][5]. U1 small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) are essential components of the spliceosome involved in pre-mRNA splicing and are highly conserved non-coding RNAs[2][3]. However, RNU1-40P itself is designated as a pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic sequence similar to functional genes, but it carries mutations, deletions, or sequence variations that prevent it from encoding a functional RNA molecule. Although some U1-related pseudogenes (called “variant U1 snRNAs”) have recently been shown to be transcribed and may regulate mRNA processing in general, there is no specific evidence for RNU1-40P being either transcribed or functional[2]. Most U1 snRNA pseudogenes, including RNU1-40P, are considered nonfunctional segments of DNA retained in the genome with no established biological activity[2]. RNU1-40P is not considered a validated or potential therapeutic target (receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.), and there is no evidence supporting its involvement in any pharmacological mechanism, disease process, drug interaction, or use as a biomarker[1][5].
