RNU2-16P, or RNA, U2 small nuclear 16, pseudogene, is a genomic sequence that closely resembles the gene encoding U2 small nuclear RNA (snRNA), a core component of the spliceosome essential for pre-mRNA splicing[1][2]. However, as a pseudogene, it is generally considered non-functional—typically not transcribed into a mature snRNA and lacking regulatory elements needed for proper expression[3]. While some "pseudogenes" in the U2 snRNA family have recently been found to be expressed and even incorporated into spliceosomes (as in RNU2-2P, now known as an active snRNA)[2], RNU2-16P itself remains annotated as a pseudogene with no evidence of expression, biological activity, or clinical relevance. It is not considered a therapeutic target and does not participate in drug interactions, regulatory mechanisms, or disease pathways. Its classification as a pseudogene means that it does not have biological functions attributed to the canonical U2 snRNA, which is vital for spliceosomal function and pre-mRNA splicing[1][2]. If future research demonstrates functional activity for RNU2-16P, this assessment would need to be revised; at present, it is treated purely as a non-functional, non-coding genomic element.
