Overview

RNA, U2 small nuclear 5, pseudogene (RNU2-5P) is a human non-coding RNA pseudogene located in the U2 snRNA multigene family. True U2 small nuclear RNAs are essential components of the spliceosome complex, responsible for pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotic cells, but RNU2-5P is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it resembles functional genes but contains mutations or structural changes that prevent proper function or expression of the mature snRNA[1][5]. As a non-coding and non-functional sequence, RNU2-5P has no known direct biological function, disease association, or role as a therapeutic target. Its presence reflects the repetitive and dynamic organization of snRNA gene families in the genome, with only a subset of U2 sequence copies being transcriptionally active and functionally relevant[1][4][3]. If highly structured information is needed, this molecule should be excluded from lists of therapeutic targets, as it is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or established drug target.

Mechanism of action

None (mechanism of action information does not apply to pseudogene)

03

Biological functions

Other (does not have a proven function as a pseudogene)The functional U2 snRNA is involved in mRNA splicing as part of the spliceosome, but RNU2-5P does not encode the functional U2 snRNA[1][3]
04

Disease associations

Other (no established or direct disease role; only disruptions to functional U2 snRNA have proven disease links, not to pseudogenes[6])
