Unlike canonical U2 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) genes such as RNU2-1 and RNU2-2, which encode essential spliceosomal RNAs, RNU2-71P is not known to be actively transcribed or to play any recognized role in RNA splicing, cellular regulation, or disease. It is not described in the literature as a therapeutic target or as being implicated in any disorders, nor is it mentioned in drug or biomarker databases. This designation should not be confused with functional snRNA genes responsible for splicing or with pseudogenes that have been recently found to be transcribed or functional in rare instances; RNU2-71P is simply listed as a non-functional pseudogene in genomic databases.
