Overview

RNA, U4 small nuclear 49, pseudogene (RNU4-49P) is a pseudogene of the U4 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family[5]. U4 snRNA plays a role as a non-coding component of the major spliceosome complex, essential for pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes[1]. However, RNU4-49P itself is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional genomic copy that does not produce a functional RNA or protein product[5]. There is no evidence that RNU4-49P is involved in disease, encodes a protein, acts as a drug target, or participates in biological functions or signaling pathways. It therefore is not considered a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes, such as RNU4-49P, commonly arise from the reverse transcription and reintegration of RNA genes, leading to sequences similar to the parental gene but typically lacking regulatory elements or accumulating mutations that render them non-functional[3]. The major, functional copies of U4 snRNA—such as those encoded by *RNU4-1* and *RNU4-2*—are implicated in disease only when mutated, but these effects do not extend to snRNA pseudogenes like RNU4-49P[2][6][7]. The pseudogene itself is not linked to disorder or therapeutic relevance.
