RNA, U5E small nuclear 1 (RNU5E-1) is a variant of the U5 small nuclear RNA, which is an essential RNA component of the major spliceosomal machinery responsible for the precise removal of introns from pre-mRNA during gene expression in eukaryotic cells. U5E-1 is assembled into small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) particles and participates in the formation of the spliceosomal U4/U5/U6 tri-snRNP complex essential for pre-mRNA splicing. Unlike the most abundant U5 isoforms, RNU5E-1 represents about 7% of the U5 pool in HeLa cells. RNU5E-1 has recently been identified as down-regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues and cell lines; its expression is correlated with tumor characteristics, recurrence, and patient survival, marking it as a potential tumor suppressor and a molecular biomarker for HCC diagnosis and prognosis. No direct drug interactions or therapeutic targeting are currently known, and RNU5E-1 is not considered a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. If more detailed canonical forms (such as a unique protein makeup or post-translational modifications for a receptor) are required, those are not applicable here since RNU5E-1 is a non-coding RNA, not a protein-coding gene.
