Overview

RNU6-1004P is a processed pseudogene derived from the highly conserved U6 small nuclear RNA gene, an essential component of the spliceosome involved in pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes. Pseudogenes like RNU6-1004P are commonly found in vertebrate genomes due to historical retrotransposition events mediated by elements such as LINE-1 (L1). Unlike functional U6 snRNA, which actively participates in catalytic spliceosome assembly and intron removal, RNU6-1004P does not produce a functional RNA and is considered nonfunctional in biological processes. Although the sequence may resemble the original U6 snRNA, it generally contains mutations, truncations, or other changes that prevent normal function. Research into U6 snRNA pseudogenes helps elucidate genome structure and retrotransposon dynamics but does not support their status as druggable or therapeutic targets.
