RNU6-104P is a processed pseudogene, meaning it originated from an RNA intermediate of the functional U6 small nuclear RNA gene, usually via retrotransposition events mediated by LINE-1 (L1) elements[4]. Unlike the parent U6 snRNA, which is integral to the spliceosome and involved in intron excision during mRNA maturation[1][4], RNU6-104P does not typically produce functional RNA or protein. While some pseudogenes can have regulatory effects at the RNA level, RNU6-104P is mainly considered nonfunctional "junk DNA," although evolutionary and functional roles for pseudogenes more generally are being investigated[3][5]. The presence of U6 snRNA pseudogene copies in the genome serves as a marker of retrotransposition activity but does not confer receptor or enzyme functionality[4].
