Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 1091, pseudogene (RNU6-1091P) is a non-functional copy (pseudogene) of the U6 small nuclear RNA gene. U6 small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) are highly conserved non-coding RNAs that play an essential role in the splicing of pre-mRNAs as part of the spliceosome complex in eukaryotic nuclei[5][3][1]. However, RNU6-1091P itself is not active; it does not produce a functional RNA product and does not participate in splicing. Such pseudogenes arise from duplication or retrotransposition events, resulting in gene copies that have accumulated disabling mutations. While the U6 parental gene is essential for cell viability due to its role in mRNA splicing, RNU6-1091P serves mainly as a genomic artifact. Occasionally, pseudogenes in other families have been found to play regulatory roles at the RNA level[4], but no such function has been described for RNU6-1091P.

Biological functions

Other (No direct biological function, as typical for pseudogenes)Possible minor roles, e.g. indirect regulation via RNA-mediated mechanisms in some pseudogene transcripts, but not specific for RNU6-1091P
03

Disease associations

Other (Generally, U6-derived pseudogenes are not implicated in disease directly)Some functional pseudogenes have been shown in other contexts to act as competing endogenous RNAs, miRNA sponges, or epigenetic regulators, but there is no evidence for such a function specifically for RNU6-1091P
