Overview

RNU6-1160P is a genomic locus annotated as a pseudogene derived from U6 small nuclear RNA genes. U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) is normally a critical non-coding RNA component of the spliceosome, the ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for removing introns from pre-mRNA during RNA splicing[1][2]. In contrast, RNU6-1160P does not encode a functional U6 snRNA due to mutations or sequence interruptions acquired during evolution, as is typical for pseudogenes[3][4]. It shares sequence similarity with functional U6 snRNA genes but is not involved in pre-mRNA splicing and does not form part of the spliceosome machinery. Pseudogenes like RNU6-1160P are common in the human genome, especially for highly conserved RNA families such as U6, but usually lack functional products or regulatory roles, unless otherwise experimentally demonstrated[3][4].
