Overview

**RNA, U6 small nuclear 1177, pseudogene (RNU6-1177P)** is a non-functional processed pseudogene derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA gene, which is part of a family of non-coding RNAs critical for pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes[1][3][4][5]. U6 snRNA is highly conserved and essential for spliceosome activity, but RNU6-1177P lacks the capacity for normal snRNA function due to its classification as a pseudogene, generally defined by sequence mismatches, truncations, and inability to produce functional RNA. The human genome contains hundreds of U6-derived pseudogenes, formed by retrotransposition mechanisms such as L1 retrotransposon-mediated reverse transcription, which integrate snRNA gene fragments into new locations[4][5]. These pseudogenes are not known to encode proteins or have regulatory functions, and their presence is primarily of interest in studies of genome evolution, retrotransposition dynamics, and genetic architecture. RNU6-1177P itself is not considered a therapeutic target, a biomarker, or a disease risk gene, and is typically ignored in functional genomic analyses. Parent U6 snRNA is involved in mRNA splicing[1][3], and general snRNA pseudogene burden may be used in genome architecture studies[4].
