Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 1262, pseudogene (abbreviated as RNU6-1262P) is a human gene classified as a pseudogene. It is not a protein-coding gene and does not encode a functional product; rather, it is a remnant of a once-functional gene that now lacks biological activity. RNU6-1262P is a genomic element classified as a processed small nuclear RNA pseudogene located on chromosome 16. Pseudogenes such as RNU6-1262P are derived from functional genes (in this case, U6 small nuclear RNA genes) but have lost their ability to encode functional RNA through evolutionary events, such as duplication and retrotransposition. U6 snRNA pseudogenes have been used as markers of retrotransposition dynamics and genome evolution. Unlike the functional U6 snRNA, which plays a key role in the spliceosomal excision of introns from pre-mRNA, RNU6-1262P does not participate in any cellular biological process or have any known disease associations. It is not considered a therapeutic or pharmacological target in any context. Its only significance is as a genomic marker of retrotransposition history within the human genome.
