01

Overview

RNU6-1340P encodes a pseudogene copy of the small nuclear RNA U6, labeled by its locus. U6 small nuclear RNA is involved in the spliceosome complex required for pre-mRNA splicing, but the RNU6-1340P locus is not transcribed or functional for this activity. Instead, it represents a processed pseudogene formed via L1 retrotransposition, a process by which enzyme machinery retrocopies and inserts noncoding RNA fragments elsewhere in the genome[2]. These pseudogenes lack regulatory elements and are not spliced, transcribed, or translated into proteins. No evidence currently supports a functional, regulatory, or disease-related role for RNU6-1340P. It is a marker of historical retrotransposition events[2][3]. Its only established significance is as a genomic landmark of retrotranspositional activity and genome architecture[2].
