Overview

RNU6-246P is a pseudogene of the U6 small nuclear RNA gene family, denoted as "RNA, U6 small nuclear 246, pseudogene". Pseudogenes are non-functional segments of DNA that resemble functional genes but lack their biological activity. The U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) itself is a highly conserved and crucial component of the spliceosome complex, critical for pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotic cells[3][1]. However, RNU6-246P contains sequence similarities to the functional U6 snRNA, but due to its pseudogene status, it does not produce a functional RNA product and is regarded as a genomic relic with no recognized biochemical or disease-modifying function[2][5]. Pseudogenes like RNU6-246P commonly arise via retrotransposition mechanisms and serve as markers of genome evolution and retrotransposon dynamics, but they are not considered therapeutic targets, biomarkers, or active biological molecules in disease or drug response[5].
