RNA, U6 small nuclear 251, pseudogene (RNU6-251P) is a non-functional, non-coding RNA segment in the human genome, annotated as a pseudogene. It is derived from duplication and mutation of the U6 small nuclear RNA gene and does not encode a functional small nuclear RNA. Unlike functional small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), which participate in the spliceosomal excision of introns from pre-mRNA[3], pseudogenes like RNU6-251P do not produce active transcripts and have no demonstrated physiological or pathological roles; most are presumed to be "silent" copies maintained through evolutionary processes[2][6][1]. There is no evidence of protein-coding capability, no known biological activity, and it is not considered a therapeutic target. Note: RNU6-251P is fundamentally different from functional U6 snRNA genes such as RNU6-2, which are widely used as controls in gene expression studies and have a clearly defined role in RNA splicing[3][5][2]. RNU6-251P, by contrast, is one of many "back-up" pseudogenes, lacking expression and biological function.
