RNU6-256P is a member of the U6 small nuclear RNA pseudogene family. U6 snRNA is a highly conserved, non-coding RNA critical for pre-mRNA splicing as part of the spliceosome complex, where it participates in post-transcriptional modification. Pseudogenes like RNU6-256P are non-functional sequences originating from retrotranspositional events or gene duplication, and do not encode active RNA or protein. Multiple U6 snRNA pseudogenes exist in vertebrate genomes, serving as evolutionary markers and evidence of retrotranspositional dynamics. Unlike functional U6 snRNA, pseudogenes have no known biological, disease, or pharmacological roles. Their presence reflects genome evolution, not active cellular function.
