Overview

RNU6-270P is a pseudogene corresponding to the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) family. U6 snRNA itself is an essential component of the spliceosome complex, involved in pre-mRNA splicing. However, RNU6-270P is termed a pseudogene because it is either truncated or mutated in such a way that it cannot encode a functional product or does not have regulatory activity[5][9]. Typically, pseudogenes do not produce active RNAs or proteins, but in some cases, pseudogene transcripts can have regulatory functions such as acting as decoys for miRNAs or generating regulatory RNAs; no evidence exists that RNU6-270P fulfills any such function[5][3][6]. Pseudogenes can be divided into two main types: processed (which arise from reverse transcription of mRNA and integration into the genome) and unprocessed (which are formed by gene duplication and subsequent mutation)[4][3][9]. Most pseudogenes, including RNU6-270P, are not transcribed, or if transcribed, do not result in functional products[5][9]. U6 snRNA pseudogenes have been studied in terms of structure, showing features such as direct repeats and rearrangements, but do not appear to have biological activity[6]. No clinical, pharmacological, or diagnostic relevance has been reported for RNU6-270P.
