U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) is an essential non-coding RNA component of the spliceosome, where it functions in the catalysis of intron removal from pre-messenger RNA during splicing[3][5]. However, the "-pseudogene" designation means RNU6-396P itself is a non-functional copy (it does not produce a functional U6 snRNA transcript or protein). Pseudogenes like RNU6-396P arise via genomic duplication or retrotransposition, and typically lack biological function; they do not participate directly in splicing[6].
