RNA, U6 small nuclear 397, pseudogene (RNU6-397P)

Target
RNU6-397P
Molecular classification
Other (pseudogene, non-coding RNA derived from small nuclear RNA)
01

Overview

RNU6-397P is a *pseudogene*—a non-coding genomic sequence similar in structure and sequence to the functional U6 small nuclear RNA gene, but lacking biological activity due to disablements such as mutations, deletions, or rearrangements. Functional U6 snRNA is highly conserved, plays a central role in spliceosome-mediated pre-mRNA splicing, and is structurally essential for forming the catalytic core of the spliceosome[1][3]. Pseudogenes like RNU6-397P result from genomic duplication and subsequent loss of function, and while they are prevalent in vertebrate genomes, they do not encode active RNA nor participate directly in splicing. The functional gene is vital for cell viability; however, RNU6-397P, as a pseudogene, is biologically inert and often regarded as genomic "fossil records" rather than active targets[6][2][5].
