RNU6-48P is a human pseudogene annotated as "RNA, U6 small nuclear 48, pseudogene."[4] It is a member of the U6 snRNA gene family, which encode small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) involved in the spliceosome machinery for pre-mRNA splicing. However, as a pseudogene, RNU6-48P is a nonfunctional DNA sequence that has lost the ability to encode the functional U6 snRNA molecule and is not transcribed into an active product involved in RNA splicing[4][5]. Pseudogenes such as RNU6-48P commonly arise by duplication or retrotransposition of active genes and accumulate disabling mutations over evolutionary time[1][4][5]. They are retained in the genome but have no direct known function, physiological role, or therapeutic relevance. There is no evidence that RNU6-48P participates in disease, nor is it a drug target, biomarker, or factor in human therapy[4].
