RNU6-486P is a human pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the functional U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA). U6 snRNA itself is an essential component of the spliceosome, actively participating in pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes[1][3]. Unlike the functional U6 snRNA gene, pseudogenes like RNU6-486P do not produce functional RNA and are typically considered non-coding "genomic fossils." Some pseudogenes, however, may retain the ability to be transcribed and could participate in regulatory mechanisms (such as antisense regulation, RNA–RNA interactions, competition for microRNAs or RNA-binding proteins), but this is context-specific and not generally the case for most U6 pseudogenes[2]. Notably, the presence of U6 pseudogenes in the genome underscores the evolutionary importance of U6 snRNA, but these copies are not functional components of the spliceosome nor drug targets[3][5].
