RNU6-493P
Molecular classification
Other, pseudogene, non-coding RNA derivative
01

Overview

RNU6-493P is a human pseudogene related to the U6 small nuclear RNA gene. The canonical functional U6 snRNA is a core component of the spliceosome, playing an essential catalytic role in pre-mRNA splicing. U6 snRNA and its functional gene loci are highly conserved and critical for cellular viability. However, RNU6-493P is noncoding and has arisen from duplication and subsequent mutation or sequence drift from the functional gene. Unlike its parental gene, there is no evidence that RNU6-493P encodes a functional RNA or protein, nor is it implicated in biological processes or diseases. Pseudogenes like RNU6-493P typically serve no functional role. Occasionally, pseudogenes can modulate gene expression by acting as decoys for miRNAs or sources of non-coding RNA, but this has not been established for RNU6-493P. As such, it is not a receptor, not a drug target, and not relevant for therapeutic applications.

Biological functions

Most pseudogenes have no known coding function. Some, rarely, can regulate parental gene expression or participate in regulatory RNA networks, but for RNU6-493P, there is no experimentally validated function.
