Overview

**RNA, U6 small nuclear 494, pseudogene** (RNU6-494P) is a genomic pseudogene that derives from the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family. U6 snRNA itself is a highly conserved non-coding RNA that functions as an essential component of the spliceosome, the cellular machinery responsible for pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes[3][1]. However, *pseudogenes* like RNU6-494P are generally regarded as genomic sequences that resemble functional RNA genes but are not themselves expressed or do not yield functionally relevant transcripts or proteins. The human genome contains hundreds of U6 snRNA-related pseudogenes, most of which are not known to have functional roles, are not expressed, and do not participate in canonical RNA biology or disease processes[4]. There is no evidence that RNU6-494P produces a functional RNA, nor is it considered a therapeutic target, nor does it play a role in known pathologies or in drug mechanisms. It is included as a part of the non-coding RNA pseudogene repertoire cataloged in the reference human genome for genomic annotation and evolutionary studies[4][7].
