Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 50, pseudogene (RNU6-50P) is a non-coding RNA pseudogene in humans, classified as a derivative of the U6 small nuclear RNA gene family[1][2][3]. Functional U6 snRNA is an essential component of the spliceosome and plays a critical role in the removal of introns from pre-mRNA, contributing to gene expression regulation in eukaryotes[4][5]. RNU6-50P, however, is considered a pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic copy that lacks function due to mutations in its sequence[1][2][3]. As such, RNU6-50P is not considered a therapeutic target, biomarker, or a molecule with direct biological activity. It does not encode any functional RNA and has no established role in disease or pharmacology[1][2][3]. The listing as a "target" is incorrect in the strict biomedical sense. The functional copy, U6 small nuclear RNA, is highly conserved and central to the catalytic activity of the spliceosome[4][5]. Many copies and pseudogenes of the U6 snRNA gene exist within the human genome, reflecting its evolutionary importance, but only the functional U6 snRNA is actively involved in biological processes[5]. RNU6-50P’s classification as a pseudogene excludes it from molecular families such as receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.[2][3].
