RNU6-500P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, non-coding RNA
01

Overview

RNU6-500P is a pseudogene associated with U6 small nuclear RNA, which is an essential non-coding RNA component of the spliceosome complex responsible for mRNA splicing in eukaryotic cells[3][1]. Unlike the functional U6 snRNA gene, RNU6-500P is a non-functional genomic element, meaning it does not encode a stable or active RNA product, nor does it participate in cellular RNA splicing processes[4]. Pseudogenes such as RNU6-500P can arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and can be present as multiple, dispersed copies throughout the genome[3][5]. While some pseudogenes have been reported to exert regulatory effects in other contexts (usually by acting as decoys for miRNAs or as competitive endogenous RNAs), there is no direct evidence that RNU6-500P is involved in regulatory activities or disease states. It should not be confused with the active U6 snRNA gene, which is critical for pre-mRNA splicing in the spliceosome[3][1].
