Overview

RNU6-536P (RNA, U6 small nuclear 536, pseudogene) is a human genomic locus classified as a **pseudogene** derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) family. Unlike its functional parent, U6 snRNA, which is a key component of the spliceosome involved in pre-mRNA splicing, RNU6-536P does not produce a functional RNA product or protein, and is annotated in genome databases as a noncoding pseudogene. Pseudogenes generally lack biological activity, but some pseudogenes in the genome may play regulatory roles by acting as microRNA decoys or influencing parental gene expression through RNA interference or epigenetic regulation. There is no published evidence for any such regulatory or disease-association function for RNU6-536P specifically. The functional U6 snRNA family is well-studied for its role in **spliceosomal catalysis**, but pseudogenes like RNU6-536P are often the result of genomic duplication events and do not contribute directly to cell biology or disease. Structural analysis has demonstrated that U6 pseudogenes have sequence similarity and may contain repetitive segments derived from their parental gene.
