Overview

RNU6-548P is a pseudogene member of the U6 small nuclear RNA gene family. U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) is a component of the spliceosome and is highly conserved and essential for pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes[3]. However, RNU6-548P is designated as a pseudogene, meaning it does not encode a functional RNA molecule and is generally considered transcriptionally inactive or non-functional. While U6 snRNA is required for splicing, pseudogene copies like RNU6-548P are presumed to be evolutionary remnants and are not known to contribute to spliceosome function or other major cellular processes. In the human genome, processed pseudogenes from small nuclear RNA families are common[3], serving mainly as genetic fossils, though in rare cases some pseudogenes can regulate biological processes at the RNA level[4]. Currently, there is no evidence that RNU6-548P has such a regulatory or disease-associated role. Key points: Not a functional therapeutic target. No evidence of drug interactions, biomarker utility, or clinical safety relevance. Primarily a genetic relic with no confirmed biological or disease role. U6 snRNA has a crucial role in the spliceosome, but this does not apply to this pseudogene copy[3].
