Target
RNU6-579P
Molecular classification
Processed pseudogene, Non-coding RNA, Small nuclear RNA pseudogene
01

Overview

RNU6-579P is a processed pseudogene copy of the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene, identified in the human genome as a result of retrotransposition events, typically involving LINE elements (L1, L2, RTE). Unlike the functional U6 snRNA, which participates in pre-mRNA splicing inside the spliceosome complex, pseudogenes such as RNU6-579P do not encode functional products and are generally regarded as “genomic fossils” representing past duplication and retrotransposition events. U6 snRNA itself is critical for splicing, but the RNU6-579P pseudogene is noncoding and inactive. There are many such snRNA pseudogenes scattered throughout the vertebrate genome, reflecting the historical importance of snRNA genes for eukaryotic gene regulation. RNU6-579P has no established role as a therapeutic target or biomarker and is not implicated directly in disease biology.
